Great news! Cap'n Fatty Goodlander has been added to our lineup of Symposium presenters. This well-known author, Cruising World editor, and NPR commentator is always out cruising and rarely available for speaking engagements-- enjoy a highly entertaining weekend with a cruising legend!

Over twenty-five top boating experts will gather with two hundred sail and power boaters in Port Townsend for the second annual Spring Boating Symposium on March 16-18. Held at the Northwest Maritime Center campus and Point Hudson Marina, the symposium will once again be an innovative blend of interactive lectures, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and opportunities to network with other boaters and experts. Presentations will be relevant to owners of both power and sailing vessels of all hull materials, arranged loosely around the themes of Seamanship, Safety Onboard, How Does It Work?, and Longer Journeys.

Confirmed presenters include Beth Leonard, Steve D'Antonio, Barbara Marrett, Lisa Vizzini, Carol Hasse, Brion Toss, Ace Spragg, Jeff Sanders and many more.

Keynote speakers for the 2012 symposium will be:

Capt'n Fatty Goodlander speaking on Chasing the Horizon: The Life and Times of a Modern Sea Gypsy
Capt'n Fatty Goodlander is an original sea gypsy. The 59-year-old sailor has lived aboard boats for 52 years sailing the world's seas and circumnavigating the globe. Goodlander and his wife, Carolyn, have sailed more than 100,000 miles on their 38-foot cutter, Wild Card, raised a family and scraped together a modest living from their floating home. Goodlander, a journalist for 30 years, admits that living full-time aboard a small boat isn't the most lucrative job in the world, but he finds joy in touching others through his articles in Cruising World and through books he's written. The sailing life is something Goodlander says he'll never get out of his system.

Beth Leonard speaking on Glacier Island: The Beauty of South Georgia
Beth Leonard and her husband, Evans Starzinger, have completed two circumnavigations and logged more than 110,000 nautical miles. They have recently completed a ten-year circumnavigation by way of all of the Great Capes that took them as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Cape Horn. Beth is the author of three books: The Voyager's Handbook, Following Seas and the award-winning Blue Horizons.

Steve D'Antonio speaking on Achieving Electrical Independence and Improving Reliability through Enhanced Attention to Detail
Steve D'Antonio has nearly 25 years of experience as a marine mechanic, electrician, consultant and boatyard manager; he is considered one of the most knowledgeable boating experts in the country. He has operated Virginia-based Steve D'Antonio Marine Consulting since 2007, and is the Technical Editor of PassageMaker Magazine, a contributing editor for Professional Boat Builder and Ocean Navigator magazines and a regular contributor/columnist for Cruising World magazine.

Registration is limited to 200 people.

Lodging or marina berths are available.

Seattle Boats Afloat Show, September 14-18, Lake Union's Chandler's Cove

          posted Sep 3, 2011 3:03 PM by Troy Olason   [ updated Sep 3, 2011 3:06 PM ]

Seattle’s 33rd annual Lake Union Boats Afloat Show gets underway on Wednesday September 14th at 10 am and continues through Sunday 18th, 2011. At press time, applications from dealers and brokers were still rolling in but early indications are of some exciting new models, both power and sail, promising once again that Boats Afloat is a not-to-be-missed event that should be on every boater and would-be boater’s calendar. Also new for 2011 is Sport Boat Row featuring more than 30 wakeboard boats, ski boats and sport boats.

          SAIL
Dan Krier, vice president, yacht sales for Marine Service Center, was in France in July for the Jeanneau International Dealer Meeting and returned with the exciting news that they will have the all new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 in the Boats Afloat Show. This will be the North American debut for this boat which features a twin wheel cockpit – one of the few 37 foot boats in the marketplace to have a twin wheel cockpit – and a hard chine aft which creates better form stability, increased interior volume, and is just damn sexy! The 379 was designed by renowned French naval architect Marc Lombard.

Marine Service Center will also be showing a new Hunter e36, one of Hunter's six new offerings for the 2011 model year. The e36 boasts a fold-down transom, which not only increases the interior aft cabin space by two feet, it also makes for a roomier cockpit. The interior features a dinette-style face-to face table making on-board dining and entertaining much more comfortable and sociable.

          POWER
Seattle Boat Company will have a Cobalt 243 on display. This is notable as it’s one of two new small cuddy cabins from Cobalt in four years. (The other is a 273). In addition to the superior construction and finely detailed interiors that are hallmarks of all Cobalts, the 243 boasts a sliding companionway door that enables both wide-open access to the cabin and a separate cockpit entrance to the head compartment. And sure to be a crowd pleaser is the all-new, patent-pending "wet step" swim platform.

New to the show, Inland Sound Yachts will be showing the inaugural IS48. The IS48 Integrates modern infused composite boatbuilding with the latest propulsion technology. A “tailgate” transom design with an integral davit and low-profile Flybridge maximize utility without compromising beauty. Additionally the IS48 has a remote monitoring feature that allows the monitoring of on board systems from one’s home computer or smart phone. The IS48 is built in Port Townsend, WA, and will be available on a semi-custom basis to better serve her owner’s precise intentions and tastes.
